This is Mimi, a nine year old Southbridge resident, the face of the 2017 United Way Campaign.. Here is her story.
Mimi was adopted by her parents when she was two years old. Her parents wanted to provide the best life possible for her but when she was seven her father got very ill and couldn’t work any longer. Being an active child and having attended activities and camps at the Tri-Community YMCA all of that would have to come to halt. The cost of summer camp was just out their reach now due to illness.
Her mom decided to write to the YMCA and ask them for help so Mimi could go to Camp Foskett. The YMCA responded with a letter stating that they qualified for financial assistance due to funding from the United Way of Southbridge, Sturbridge and Charlton. So, she went to camp all summer and was able to enjoy herself, swimming and playing with her friends. This also gave her parents the time they needed to address her father’s daily medical needs.
This is an example of how the United Way helps those in our community.
